Topic Tuesday #38 2013/04/09 - "Are we alone?"

It's a classic question isn't it? It this planet the only one in the universe that has fostered life in many forms? Worse, perhaps, are Homosapien-sapiens the only "intelligent life" in the universe capable of asking the question?
There are a few facts that I am aware of that are amazing at giving a hint to an answer. Some of these facts do little more than to bend the mind and pose more query.

How many stars are in our home galaxy, the Milky Way?
(2×10^11 to 4×10^11) For those that don't like exponents, that's 200,000,000,000 to 400,000,000,000, or 200 billion to 400 billion stars. 

How many galaxies in the observable universe?
1.7×10^11 or 170,000,000,000 or 170 billion

How many stars in the observable universe?
3×10^23 or 300,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 or 300 sextillion or 300 thousand billion billion
(according to research by Pieter G. van Dokkum and Charlie Conroy published in December 2010)
This number is comparable more than the number of grains of sand on Earth.

When was the first optical telescope invented?
The year  was 1608, or 405 years ago.

When was the first radio telescope invented? 
The year was 1937, or 76 years ago.

What is the first known use of written language on Earth?
The Kish tablet dated to ca. 3500 BC is the oldest surviving example of proto-cuneiform signs.
This places evidence of language and recorded history being a time period of roughly 5500 years.

When was the first broadcast of a terrestrial radio signal?
The first experimentation with radio was done in the late 1800's. Marconi made the first radio transmission in 1895. This was 118 years ago.

What does all this amount to? What does this mean?
Every star observed could have planets. Statistically, some of those stars will have planets in the theorized "Goldilocks Zone" where the conditions are just right to promote the conditions to bear life. In short, to think that we are alone, could be attributed to egotism. The odds are not in favor of that conclusion. Then you might think of Martians and crop circles and cattle mutilations and  so on. There is a problem with that. It's the problem that we are dealing with every day as we keep looking up. The fundamental speed limit of the universe. The speed of light.
Effectively, looking into space is time travel. No really. Think of it this way, the light or radio signals that we are observing here on our planet, had to travel across space to get here. Radio and light, being energy waves, travel at the same speed. Our closest neighbor, Alpha Centauri, is 4.39 light years away. This is where your head may start to hurt, when you realize that whatever we observe from the 3 stars in the Alpha Centauri system, happened 4.39 years ago. The stars in Alpha Centauri could explode today, and we wouldn't notice until August 29, 2017. 
Our star, Sol (aka the Sun), is classified as a G2V main sequence star, roughly middle age at 4.57 billion years. We estimate it has another 4.5 billion years left before it expands to a sub giant, then  red giant, then a planetary nebula, and finally, a white dwarf. Our own solar system tells us much of our galactic neighbors. How many planets are possible, what types of planets are likely, the practical ages of stages of star systems. Basically, a wealth of information that builds upon itself to tell us what happened to stars thousands, millions,  and billions of light years away from us. 
The trick is time and distance. There are stars that we can observe that have already passed through their main sequence (where life is most likely to form). So then we can ponder, what could have happened. As we are aware at this point is that the world will go on without us. The solar system will change, but will go on for billions of years. We are a young species and just dipping our impatient toe in a vast ocean of the unknown. 
To reach out to a species on the other side of the galaxy, we will need to learn how to overcome the speed limit. Have other species done this? Impossible to confirm, until they stand here and show us. But it would be  unwise to underestimate any possibility. We don't know they would even be interested in talking to us, or eating us. 
We are young; our period of intelligence (based on written communication) being less than 6,000 years. The signals that are most likely to be noticed, to say that we are here, have been traveling into space for no more than 118 years. We need to take the long view and have patience.

Our culture has been shaped to be very self centered. For examples;
"The world was made for man."
"The Sun revolves around the Earth, and the Earth does not move."
"The stars revolve around us, if not Earth, certainly the Sun."
"Certainly we are at the center of the universe."
"Everything was made for us, for our time here. It all lead up to this moment."

Seeing stars explode and scatter their enriched guts across space to feed the creation of another world, I find it remarkably egotistical to think that; our small planet, in an average solar system, around an average star, in an equally unremarkable arm of one of 170 billion galaxies... could somehow be more special than any other. 
We are very lucky to have made it this far. It is doubtful we are alone, but it is even more doubtful that the other intelligent life has survived to make contact with us, or that they would have even noticed us yet. Should we stop looking? Never. There is still a chance, even if it is small. While we look, we learn. One day, when we take to the stars as a space faring race, escaping from an expanding star (or whatever else we may have done), we will need to have a destination. 
We need to survive long enough to do this, so smile and hug your fellow man. Know we are children. We will make mistakes. We just need to keep some perspective. We're only human.

I remember buying my first car. I was excited as I saved up $1,500 over a summer and was going to buy it outright. It was going to be a hunk of junk, a clunker - but what does a 16 year old care really when the freedom of transportation is promised? I wrote the check... I felt sick to my stomach. I wanted to retch at the thought of the exchange... All my hard earned coin was going to be gone in an instant. I did it anyway. I got the car and had my measure of freedom and responsibility. You never forget your first time, and that was my first car and also my first big check.

In the world of finance, money has no value. Keeping this in mind may change your view of the world. Let me explain:
In the USA, we have dollars as our agreed upon currency standard. But what is a dollar? Two "sawbucks"?Four Quarters? Ten Dimes? Twenty Nickels? A hundred Pennies? Yes but not at all. A dollar is a promissory note. That's all. It's true worth is that of 'paper' (Though it's actually a complex blend of fibers more akin to fabric for durability-but I digress). We use them as a token of perceived value for the purposes of the exchange of goods and services. the currency itself has no intrinsic value at all. In the end, it's worth is a lie. But a convenient one.

I am a big fan of the barter system. I often wonder what I could gain from exchanging my skills with those around me. How much is my effort worth? I need a roasting hen for supper, so I could fix a sink, or repair a computer. Maybe saving your files from a crash would be worth a large pig or a cow, or painting my house in return, or maybe the paint. Hard to say. Very hard to say. Can we exist on it alone? No. Not really. What would the power company ask you in trade for a Kilowatt Hour to run said computer? What would the city ask in return for protection and clean water? It's a slippery slope to a feudal system. A liege lord and his castle keep taking care of the main functions of society while you pledge your loyalty to them. Or worse even... The company store, where you pay back your wage of effort to be always a little behind and become an indentured servant, slave labor, deep in a coal mine.


We do need regulation and standardization in a modern day. But let's review just 2 generations ago. Your grandmother could go down to the corner store and buy a loaf of bread for a nickel. She thought that was expensive. Today, the same loaf, though likely much worse for us, costs around $2.  Over say 75 years, the cost of a loaf of bread inflated. It's a simple task to understand the real value of a loaf of bread. It feeds you. It provides nourishment. It is sustenance. You can't fill your belly with money alone and expect to live long. We go with the perceived value of money. The perceived worth of a loaf of bread, a liter of water or gas or milk and so on.

It's troubling to know that the money in your pocket is almost meaningless. What happens when the men behind the curtain, that decide how much money is in circulation and what interest rates to lend more promissory notes out with, decide to print more money and circulate it wildly? The money in you hand loses value. If the regulators pull money from circulation, and artificially constraining the economy, they make the money a more scarce resource and raise it's value, it's buying power. Supply and demand - on demand. When the economy can be manipulated in such a way as the $10 you have in savings is only able to be exchanged for a quarter of what it used to, when you earned it and traded your skill and effort for it, it makes you wonder if this is the right system.

Can we go back to a fixed system? One backed by gold (The Gold Standard). Would we want to? Commodities such as gold and oil and nearly everything else of value, are traded wildly on the stock exchanges of the world. Their value fluctuates wildly.  Though the value of a dollar also fluctuates it does so at the pace of the Federal Reserve. They choose the base interest rates for borrowing, and decide how much money should be in circulation. They do so at regular intervals, so the cost of things like bread does not sway wildly out of control. It's not an enviable job. Someone will always tell you it's wrong. The sad thing is they are right in that it's always wrong for someone.

I could go on, but I want the conversation to carry it forward. Good or bad, the economy work this way in a far more efficient manner than a barter system alone could enjoy. I'm terrible at pricing my services, and will always be taken advantage of, or be made to feel like I am robbing someone if I price competitively. How many chickens is a computer rebuild worth?

In the last quarter of 2012 web browser vendors took on the topic of "DNT" (Do Not Track) as a feature to be added in their various browsers. What is DNT? You may have heard to empty your cookies now and then and delete your cache. That is where tracking lives (for the most part). Cookies are used as a kind of passport from one website (or within a websites various pages). They carry authentication tokens, information about your browser, your computer, you, how long the credential is valid for, and permissions therein. There are "Third Party" cookies that are generated typically from advertising vendors for various web pages and they can quite literally follow you around the internet. Ever notice the ads being targeted to you? Like you just bought something on one site and a completely different site then tries to sell you a competing or complimentary item? I bet you have but you may not have connected the dots. These can all be equated to being stamps in your passport and when handing it to the next "agent", they get to see where you've been and add their own "stamp". 
Where am I going with this? Simple, do we not have the right to be left alone? The DNT engineering specifications provide for meta data to be added to browser queries to "opt out" of being tracked. Sounds great, then they won't be spying on me all the time. There are a few catches to this. 1) The DNT Spec indicated it should be off by default. 2) Websites are under no mandate to comply, rendering it exceptionally weak. 3) Microsoft decided to break the spec by turning it on by default in the latest IE versions, causing a big stir. 4) Vendors have varying levels, from obnoxious to that wasn't too bad, of ease to enable the DNT header, continuing to make it obtuse to user adoption.

Number three is the big game changer here. Microsoft is in the consumers court on this one. The rest of the industry (the other 46% of the browser market) and the Apache Software Foundation (provider of back end web hosting software) are not happy with Microsoft's choice in the matter. There are a few reasons. Apache is mad because it breaks the specification, so they are retaliating by having their servers ignore the request from IE clients. Other providers, like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera, have decided to implement the spec and are capable of it, but turned off by default.  Why are we being tracked at all? Money. Money. Money. Oh and some data metrics too - that leads to more money. Did you ever consider how the web works? It works predominately on advertising revenue. Google, the ginormous search engine company, is primarily an advertising company. That is where their revenue comes from. Why do they give so many services away? Because those services make you see more ads. The companies that provide ads want to know their money is being well spent, so they demand metrics. Perfectly reasonable. Those metrics are collected by tracking cookies. There is an old adage, "if you're getting something for free, you're likely the product being sold". They give you the service in exchange for your participation in giving them information about your spending habits, browsing habits and sometimes, habits in general. 
Recently there was even a researcher that used the vast data stores (known by the buzz words "Big Data") was able to correlate drug interactions between two popular drugs, a cholesterol medication and an antidepressant. The two interacted to bring on diabetes if left unchecked, and this interaction would not have been so easily found if it had not been for the aggregated (anonymized) big data from search engines. 
So what we have here is a conundrum of what is ours. When does our search become the property of a search engine? What will they do with that information once they have it? Can "the Feds" come in and take it all and use it against you? What is a reasonable expectation of privacy? 
This is where it gets complicated. The Fourth Amendment is our guarantor of privacy, as long as you expand it to it's reasonable extents: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized." You are protected by the Fourth Amendment when people have "a reasonable expectation of privacy in a particular situation". The litmus test for this has been the following statement for the last century or so: "there is a reasonable expectation of privacy only if there is a reasonable expectation that certain information may be kept secret.". Over the last 50 years or so, lawyers have taken to this expectation if you can swap "privacy" with "secret" in a sentence or paragraph and not have the meaning changed.
Is secrecy still a prerequisite for privacy? In out modern times it's debatable...

For clarification purposes, the dictionary definitions are as follows:
Secret: a: kept from knowledge or view b: marked by the habit of discretion c: working with hidden aims or methods d: not acknowledged e: conducted in secret
Private: a: intended for or restricted to the use of a particular person, group, or class b: belonging to or concerning an individual person, company, or interest c(1): restricted to the individual or arising independently of others c(2): carried on by the individual independently of the usual institutions d: not general in effect

Of these definition, A seems to suit out needs well enough in both cases. 
For example: A social security number is not a secret as many people have access to that information. A social security number is private and is only shared with a restricted set of people or companies that have authorization to have that information. 
Justice Louis Brandeis

The world is ever changing and the law is struggling to keep up. Thanks to many of our forward thinking supreme court justices through the years, we have been able to keep a decent pace with privacy concerns. Justice Louis Brandeis, in his dissenting opinion on Olmstead v. United States (1928) attempted to make privacy concerns kin to constitutional law. I'll leave you with this infamous sentiment from that opinion and a few more quotes:  
"The makers of our Constitution undertook to secure conditions favorable to the pursuit of happiness. They recognized the significance of man's spiritual nature, of his feelings and of his intellect. They knew that only part of the pain, pleasure and satisfactions of life are to be found in material things. They sought to protect Americans in their beliefs, their thoughts, their emotions and their sensations. They conferred against the government, the right to be let alone—the most comprehensive of rights and the right most valued by civilized men." - Justice Louis Brandeis in Olmstead v. US, 1928.

"Specific guarantees in the Bill of Rights have penumbras, formed by emanations from those guarantees that help give them life and substance. Various guarantees create zones of privacy. . . . The Third Amendment, in its prohibition against the quartering of soldiers 'in any house' in time of peace without the consent of the owner, is another facet of that privacy. The Fourth Amendment explicitly affirms the 'right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures.' The Fifth Amendment, in its Self-Incrimination Clause, enables the citizen to create a zone of privacy which government may not force him to surrender to his detriment. The Ninth Amendment provides: 'The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.'" - United States Supreme Court in Griswold v. Connecticut, 1965.

"As the Court's opinion states, 'the Fourth Amendment protects people, not places.' The question, however, is what protection it affords to those people. Generally, as here, the answer to that question requires reference to a 'place.' My understanding of the rule that has emerged from prior decisions is that there is a twofold requirement, first that a person have exhibited an actual (subjective) expectation of privacy and, second, that the expectation be one that society is prepared to recognize as 'reasonable.'" - Justice John Marshall Harlan, on Katz v. United States, 1967.

"This right of privacy, whether it be founded in the Fourteenth Amendment's concept of personal liberty and restrictions upon state action, as we feel it is, or, as the District Court determined, in the Ninth Amendment's reservation of rights to the people, is broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy." - United States Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade, 1973.

How lucky that Topic Tuesday has fallen on Christmas and the New Year! So the obligatory holiday education post is at hand. Let's look at the Calendar for origins of this, our only Global/Universal, holiday.

On the Calendar(s): The primary calendar that we have wide familiarity with is the Gregorian Calendar, but the story doesn't start there. Let's go back to it's earliest incarnation.
Roman Calendar
Numa Pompilius (753–673 BC; reigned 715–673 BC), second king of Rome, created the Roman Calendar which was superseded in 46 BC by Julius Caesar's "Julian Calendar". Caesar's version had the year beginning in January, unlike the Roman calendar that started in March. The Julian Calendar was utilized by most of Europe from 45 BC until it was superseded by the Gregorian calendar commencing in 1582. The Julian Calendar is still in use in parts of the world today and is primarily used to track observance dates of fixed feasts and  moveable feasts.

Pope Gregory XIII

The Gregorian Calendar was promulgated by Pope Gregory XIII, after whom the calendar was named, by a decree signed on 24 February 1582; the decree, a papal bull, is known by its opening wordsInter gravissimas. Reform was required because too many leap days are added with respect to the astronomical seasons on the Julian scheme. On average, the astronomical solstices and the equinoxes advance by about 11 minutes per year against the Julian year. As a result, the calculated date of Easter gradually moved out of alignment with the March equinox. The Julian calendar gained a day about every 134 years. By 1582, it was ten days out of alignment from where it supposedly had been in 325 during the Council of Nicaea
The Gregorian calendar was adopted initially by the Catholic countries of Europe, with other countries adopting it over the following centuries. Since the Julian and Gregorian calendars were long used simultaneously, although in different places, calendar dates in the transition period are often ambiguous, unless it is specified which calendar was being used. The notation "Old Style" (OS) is sometimes used to indicate a date in the Julian calendar, as opposed to "New Style" (NS), which either represents the Julian date with the start of the year as 1 January or a full mapping onto the Gregorian calendar. This notation is used to clarify dates from countries which continued to use the Julian calendar after the Gregorian reform, such as Great Britain (switched in 1752),  Russia (1918), or Greece (1923).

January : "Ianuarius" is the original Roman designation of the month JanuaryThe name is either derived from the two-faced Roman god Janus, from the Latin word 'ianua', which means "door", or it is the masculine form of Diana, which would beDianus or Ianus (Janus). The Romans dedicated January and specifically New Year's Day to Janus. Janus is usually depicted as a "two-faced" god since one face is looking forward to the future and the other face looks backward to the past. January 1 was new year day: the day was consecrated to Janus since it was the first of the new year and of the month (kalends) of Janus: the feria (Latin -"free day") had an augural (fortune telling) character as Romans believed the beginning of anything was an omen for the whole. It became customary to exchange cheerful words of good wishes. For the same reason everybody took a break from their usual business, exchanged dates, figs and honey as a token of well wishing and made gifts of coins. All these were called 'strenae'.


Cakes made of spelt (dinkel wheat, or hulled wheat) and salt were offered to the god and burnt on the altar. It is interesting to note that, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, many of these customs have migrated to Christmas.

Celebrations:

Roman: Fortuna (LatinFortūna, equivalent to the Greek goddess Tyche)
Roman: Agonalia
Feast of Juno and Janus, god of beginnings and thresholds. On this day, no evil may be spoken, so that the day and the year may be sweet. "Words have weight, and the ears of the Deities are open." (Ovid, Fasti). Friends exchange small jars of honey with dates or figs, along with good wishes and coins. These were called Strenae, after the Sabine Goddess of Health. This custom has continued in France to this day.
In medieval times, people wore animal masks on this day; this was called "guising."
Greek: Gamelia, Feast of the Goddess of Marriage, Hera (corresponding to the Roman Juno).
Anglo-Saxon: Wassail (Old English wæs hæl, literally 'be you healthy') "Be Hale (whole)"  Additionally the tradition of wassailing which falls into two distinct categories: The House-Visiting wassail and the Orchard-Visiting wassail. House-Visiting wassail, caroling by any other name, is the practice of people going door-to-door singing Christmas carols. These have also migrated to Christmas.
Roman: Feast of Aesculapius (Greek Healing God), his mother Coronis, and his daughter Salus (Health), whose Greek counterpart is the goddess Hygieia, though her functions differ considerably.
Sumerian: Inanna's (Sumerian goddess of sexual love, fertility, and warfare.) Nativity feast is begun by lighting a white candle at sunset. It is to burn through the night and is extinguished at dawn.

Modern Day, We drink, dance, sing songs, like Auld Lang Syne, to which we always get the words wrong.

Clarification of the term 'Happy Holidays' seems to be needed nearly every year. Given that I reside in the United States of America where we are graced with the Constitution and its amendments, there is plenty of reason to call attention to this. Certain media outlets insist that there is a war on Christmas every time someone says something other than, "Merry Christmas". The origins of celebrations during this time of year date back to when man realized that the longest night/shortest day of the year occurred, the Winter Solstice. Since the axial tilt of the Earth is considerable (approximately 23 degrees 27 minutes) the sun does not rise high at high latitudes in (local) winter. Those that found themselves in more northern latitudes, would experience significantly longer nights to the extent of a twilight lasting 20 hours to 179 days at the poles. This was a big deal to early agrarian and hunter gatherer cultures in the northern hemisphere. Additionally humans are not designed for this kind of environment. The period of polar night can trigger depression in some people. Cases of SAD or seasonal affective disorder are generally exacerbated by these conditions. The polar night may also be implicated in some instances of solipsism syndrome. It's easy to see why traditions would get setup around such a pivotal time of year. The harvest was in, the snow lay thick, and travel was ill advised. Best to just stick with your family and close neighbors and as we say in the south, hunker down. The combination of events fostered traditions of feasts and reverie. Myths and fairy tales of ghosts, and vampires and werewolves are also said to have their origins in the longest nights.

**December 25th was specifically chosen to be the day to celebrate the birth of Jesus in the 4th century by Pope Julius I. An arbitrary day had to be set as there was none given within the scriptures (births were not celebrated 2000 years ago, only the dates of deaths were observed). It served another purpose, that of conversion. Stephen Nissenbaum, professor history at the University of Massachusetts  Amherst, wrote in reference to Saturnalia (December 17-25), “In return for ensuring massive observance of the anniversary of the Savior’s birth by assigning it to this resonant date, the Church for its part tacitly agreed to allow the holiday to be celebrated more or less the way it had always been.”

Iconography:
Yule Log: English historian Henry Bourne, who, writing in the 1720s, described the practice occurring in the Tyne valley. Bourne theorized that the practice derives from customs in 6th to 7th century Anglo-Saxon paganism.
Ginger Breadmen: Saturnalia, local custom primarily in the more Germanic regions. Biscuits shaped like humans, dating back to some of the more colorful human sacrifice rites that were often performed.
Caroling: As part of Saturnalia, there was often drunken and naked singing though the streets. This was "adjusted" by the church when Saturnalia was co-opted into singing hymns.
Mistletoe: Norse mythology recounts how the god Balder was killed using a mistletoe arrow by his rival god Hoder while fighting for the female Nanna. At some point it gets twisted into kissing under the mistletoe from a combination of the debauchery of Saturnalia and the traditions of some druidic sects. 
Christmas Tree: The Asheira cult, worshiped trees. At the time of the Winter Solstice, they would decorate the very trees they worshiped. In another attempt to win the pagans over to Christianity, the practice of bringing a tree into your home and decorating it was incorporated into the newly formed celebration of Christ’s birth. 
Gift Giving: The emperors of pre-Christian Rome compelled their citizens to bring offerings and gifts during the Saturnalia (in December) and Kalends (in January). This ritual/tradition expanded to include gift-giving among the populace. Christian flavor was added by re-rooting it in the gift-giving of Saint Nicholas. Boxing Day is also a gift giving celebration.
Santa Claus: Nicholas was born in Parara, Turkey in 270 CE and later became Bishop of Myra. He died in 345 CE on December 6th. He was named a saint in the 19th century.
Nicholas was among the senior bishops who convened the Council of Nicaea in 325 CE and created the New Testament.
In 1087, Nicholas remains were moved Turkey to a sanctuary in Bari, Italy. In Bari, Nicholas supplanted a female boon-giving deity called The Grandmother, or Pasqua Epiphania, who used to fill the children's stockings with her gifts.
The adopted Nicholas gift giving spread north. It was adopted by groups who worshiped a pantheon led by Woden –their chief god and the father of Thor, Balder, and Tiw. Woden had a long, white beard and rode a horse through the heavens one evening each Autumn. When Nicholas legend merged with Woden, he shed his Mediterranean appearance, grew a beard, mounted a flying horse, rescheduled his flight for December, and donned heavy winter clothing.
The Catholic Church adopted the Nicholas legends and traditions and taught that he distributed gifts on December 25th instead of December 6th.
In 1809, Washington Irving wrote a satire of Dutch culture entitled Knickerbocker History. The work refers several times to the white bearded, flying-horse riding Saint Nicholas using his Dutch name, Santa Claus.
Dr. Clement Moore, a professor at Union Seminary, read the book and in 1822 he published a poem based on the character Santa Claus: “Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in the hope that Saint Nicholas soon would be there…” Moore innovated by portraying a Santa with eight reindeer who descended through chimneys.
The Bavarian illustrator Thomas Nast elaborated the imagery of Santa Claus with more than 2,200 illustrations appearing in Harper's Weekly from 1862 through 1886. Nast gave Santa a home at the North Pole, his workshop filled with elves, and his list of the good and bad children.
In 1931, the Coca Cola Corporation contracted the Swedish commercial artist Haddon Sundblom to create a coke-drinking Santa. Sundblom modeled his Santa on his friend Lou Prentice, chosen for his cheerful, chubby face. The corporation insisted that Santa’s fur-trimmed suit be bright and Coca Cola red. The Modern Santa was born – a blend of Christian crusader, pagan god, and commercial idol.

On the Separation of Church and State...

Setting the Scene: May 25th, 1787, Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia. Gathered in the same room where the Declaration of Independence was signed (11 years earlier) are 55 criminals of Britain of whom a few names ring out quite loudly. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, and the chief architect of the Constitution - James Madison, Jr. This document, though not very long, was the culmination of several plans - neatly compromised into the document that was signed September 17th, 1787 - Full ratification was not until June 12, 1792. 40 of 55 signed it (not everyone could stay or wanted what was written) and 12 of the 13 states were represented (Rhode Island sent no representative) Ages of these men ranged from Franklin at 81 to Jonathan Dalton at age 26. 23 were Revolutionary War veterans. Roger Sherman of Connecticut was the only one present to have signed the Articles of Association, the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. These men were well aware of the reason they were present and the stakes that lay before them and their new country. Of the signers the following were not Christians (some only interned in Christian institutions): James Madison, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Gunning Bedford, Jr., Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer, Richard Dobbs Spaight, George Clymer, Gouverneur Morris, John Langdon, Nicholas Gilman, Nathaniel Gorham, Roger Sherman, Rufus King, William Blount, Jared Ingersoll. That's 15 out of 40. While searching through the memoirs and writings of the founding fathers, there were key themes that drove them at this conference, in no particular order:
Freedom of religious practice.
Not having religious practice be as a mandate for government service.
Fair representation by the people in the new government. 
Purposely having no religion in the document whatsoever. 
Madison and Washington, were both classified as Diests. These two Presidents of the Enlightenment were staunchly opposed to religious involvement in government. That is what they were escaping when they came to this land. Washington would not go on record, even to his dying day, for what faith he trusted. He mentioned it would only serve to divide the people. When confronted by clergy that there lacked mention of Jesus Christ in the Constitution, Washington said, "...the path of true piety is so plain as to require but little political direction", and in a letter "Religious controversies are always productive of more acrimony and irreconcilable hatreds than those which spring from any other cause."
Madison, as president, was so staunch in the separation of church and state that even the issuance of sanction, where no money would ever be involved, was too much and denied.
The Enlightenment, the age from which our founding fathers pulled this nation together, was an age of science and reason. Benjamin Franklin as a scientist invented the lightning rod. The church frowned upon this fantastic invention at the time as it prevented the almighty from smiting people with lighting - I kid you not.
The church, ANY church, while teaching from a stagnant book of allegorical tales spun from tribe to tribe in the deserts of the "promised land" has no business influencing policy for a nation of people that don't agree with the passages of their teachings. This is true from religion to religion where they even share the same texts or same story but interpret them differently. What are laws? Laws are merely the moral structure of a people, converted into enforceable rules of conduct. As soon as you legislate a belief and not a fact, then you have done the entire culture a disservice and made it that much easier for the infringement to be done again, and again. Faith Based Initiatives, National Day Of Prayer, Congress being opened by a Priest with a prayer, Governors having church sponsored lunches, having religious iconography on public (taxpayer supported) property, anything that provides favoritism to belief... These are the things that erode, in completely natural ways, the fundamental division that keeps this nation thriving. Religion has served to obstruct progress at every turn, as progress usually means the loss of control for their dogma. Contraception means that the church can no longer mandate sexual practices. Did you know that sodomy is often considered any position other than "missionary"? Did you know that until 2003 (Lawrence v. Texas), sodomy was illegal in nearly every state? Religion is as much about its control as it is good works. I argue that religion is not required to do good works, and you certainly can control yourselves. If you think you require morals from the church to guide yourself or your government, then you are fooling yourselves. "Morals" existed long before there was a chosen people wandering the desert, or the Sumerians invented glue 7,000 years ago, or when the Japanese invented pottery over 10,000 years ago. The Golden Rule existed as a concept, since it is such a simple one, (expressed neatly by Wil Wheaton as "Don't Be A Dick") long before the ancients figured out writing. The case is made clearer by the plain fact that if we had been so unruly, then we would have never figured out how to write down rules in the first place.
Back to the rules, simply put, there is nothing that religion can offer law or science that these fields would be unable to figure out on their own through generalized good behavior and diligence... To allow the two to mix is to return steadily to the dark ages where the church was law and people were burned at the stake for speaking the truth.

W. A. Criswell (Reagan's choice for the 1984 Benediction of the RNC) said, "The separation of church and state is the figment of some infidels imagination." Criswell introduced Reagan to a large group of fundamentalist Christians in 1980 and Reagan said to them "I know you can't endorse me but I want you to know that I endorse you." Reagan continued to erode the separation when he said, "When our Founding Fathers passed the First Amendment, they sought to protect churches from government interference. They never intended to construct a wall of hostility between government and the concept of religious belief itself."
Reagan was heavily supported by Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, to get into the Whitehouse. It was at that time that the "Religious Right" was born. Since then, every endeavour has been made to twist the purposely secular founding of the nation into a Christian Fundamentalist Ruled empire, where nationalism is measured by Bible verse.
Thomas Jefferson penned the words "Separation of Church and State".
James Madison penned Government and Religion are served by: "the total separation of Church and State."
In 1817 Madison publicly stated that "a national day of prayer would imply and certainly nourish the erroneous idea of a national religion."
Also Madison - "Establishment of a chaplainship to congress is a violation of equal rights as well as constitutional principles."
Given that I am quoting the principal author of the Constitution, I would say his words deliver the purest intent of those documents to separate fully the religious from the government. Don't let anyone try and insinuate different, when you can cite the source.

Have you ever been touched by a book so strongly, that you couldn't immediately move on? I was reading a series by Peter F. Hamilton, referred to as the Commonwealth Universe Saga, and after I finished reading them (OK I listened to them on Audible - IT'S STILL READING) I immediately started them over. I had to read the first two books again, immediately... HAD TO. I was stuck in the universe that had been presented to me. A similar thing happened after I read the sequel, the Void Trilogy. Then I read the entire series, all 5 books, again. This was not isolated to Mr. Hamilton's work. I had the same Experience with David Webber and his Honor Harrington series (13 books), and Daniel Suarez's Daemon and Freedom TM.
These books, which I consider excellent, were able to get in my head and make me a part of the universe they presented. I was engaged and they made me think.

In todays world we continue to push the limits of science. What tends to follow the science - is the philosophy...
Today, I want to look at what it takes to be human.

March 2011: Enter a dying man, Craig Lewis, 55, Dying from amyloidosis. Craig had 12-24 hours to live when his wife Linda okayed an experimental procedure by two innovated doctors at the Texas Heart Institute. Dr. Billy Cohn and Dr. Bud Frazier, successfully replaced his heart with a continuous flow pump. Two venturi like pump motors served as a replacement for the failed muscle. There was a catch though; Craig no longer had a pulse. EKG was flatlined. Linda Lewis said, "I listened and it was a hum, which was amazing. He didn't have a pulse." The technology passed multiple animal trials and it certainly passed this test.

As technology changes us, as we lose those telltale markers that we are alive, how will we adapt? Our minds are a series of electrical impulses and it's a trivial jump to reason that one day we will "backup" our consciousness, and perhaps be downloaded back into a new or greatly repaired body. How will humanity deal, with immortality? Will we still be human? With no need of an afterlife, will we need religion?

"What we have here, is a failure to communicate."  It would seem that this more true in today's world than it was in Cool Hand Luke. We don't talk to each other. We yell, or we do nothing but seethe and complain. Most of us have no relationship to our next door neighbors. If you don't live with someone, and sometimes not even then, you don't have a relationship worth opening your mouth about. We have become a consumer culture. We make very little and talk about even less. Sure we talk about sports... But that doesn't do anything. It has no purpose except for enjoyment (and sometimes profit). Why don't we talk? Even more, why do we let other people (the "talking heads") talk for us? They inflict their opinions on us, then do not listen, and we have no voice and thereby - no choice.
Why don't we talk? I remember growing up with my older parents and remember hearing about how they grew up. My mother grew up in a fairly puritan household. that meant keeping things to yourselves was the norm. Of course this seemed to be the norm for an entire generation. You only talk about religion in church, you never talk about sex, and you should refrain from talking politics whenever possible, because it's inappropriate to discuss such things in pleasant company. I think the time has come for us to stop this silly practice and discuss things. The problem with that idea is that these things have been private for so long, we have personalized them. People tend to get very heated about these topics.

So what do you think? Can we calm ourselves down and actually talk to each other about these things that we have bottled up? Am I delusional for even suggesting it?

It is said that it takes a village to raise a child. I always felt that was true, but I come from a standard model "Nuclear Family" with 2 children and a few pets somewhere in suburban America. Here in the "developed world" we have baby sitters and public education systems and all sorts of helping aids that make it possible to go 'alone' in parenting. I was fortunate and always had enough of whatever I needed. My sister is 10 years older than I am; I'm sure that made some things easier on my parents in some ways and of harder in others. I remember spending time with my grand-parents, aunts, uncles and cousins but I know that these were pretty few and,  sometimes, far in between. I remember so well because they were special, not because they were plentiful. I suppose then that my village was not a large one. As I have grown older and been exposed to the world and had children of my own, the concept of the "the Family Village" has taken on a new importance to me. I have seen how developing nations and undeveloped third world cultures, nurture children among large groups and everyone is essentially a family; protected and cared for. My wife and I decided that raising children in an urban center an hour away from a family support structure was a mistake. We have since uprooted ourselves and moved closer to my family. Over the past few years, we have experienced an inward migration and now my sister lives just a mile from us, and my parents are in between us at only half a mile. Our Family Village is set and we see each other much more often and it gives my two girls a second and third place to call home and be safe. We have a safety net, and that is simply invaluable.

Now for the topic of conversation: What place does a Family Village serve in your lives? How have you gone about creating it or coping without it? Are your close friends an extension of your Village? I sure hope so. Tell us about it.

  • Jon Jimenez When I lived in Venezuela, we had my grandparents, me and my sister, my aunt, and my aunt, uncle, and cousin living in one 3.5 bedroom apartment. This went on for many years. When me, mom and sis moved to the US, we moved in with my other aunt, uncle and cousins. Now that I've been here for a long while, I live an hour away from my family. I get the urge to move farther but I know that they are my strongest form of support and the people I love the most. I see them mostly only on holidays and bdays.
    Although ive made good friends and created momentarily extended families, I have a hard time keeping people close to me. I don't know why.
    So to me, family is the most important thing. It's a base and what keeps me grounded. It's what I search for when looking for new friends, and what I like to call people whenever I feel like I fit in. Unfortunately, like I said, I'm still kind of a loaner most times. Don't know how to change it.

I grew up in South Omaha.  Still live here.  back then I had relatives who lived scattered about up to a mile away but always nearby.

If  I was to be walking up the block to visit a friend of mine,  I was guaranteed to pass at least 2 relatives and several long time neighbors

If I happened to be getting myself into trouble out and about, those same folks would scold and kick my butt all the way home where I would REALLY get the meaning of the words "in trouble".

To me, that's what is meant by "A village to raise a child".

Having those people living in proximity to you to reinforce family values and expectations, etc...

Now, for my kids, a lot of family members have moved away and my kids don't have the same family /neighborhood like that.

to make up somewhat for that, in my opinion anyway, being a part of a church/school community allows for somewhat of the interaction of kids being able to interact with  trusted and known adults who see kids and one kid is the same as the other , they look out for them all.

it's not quite the same as being able to wander the neighborhood like I used to do, but by making an effort to participate in activities and events gives as much similar as possible.

Photo of fallen power lines.Here's a hypothetical situation to get your neurons firing. Wherever you are, the power just simply goes out. No one on the radio or TV says anything for a few hours. Your cell phone is glitchy, and calls fail almost immediately, and you don't have reliable data. Even SMS isn't always making it to your contacts. You are cut off. The power is down, inexplicably, and you have no idea when it will be restored (if it will be restored) Assume at this moment, you don't have power for the foreseeable future unless you are the source. Now (easy for hurricane veterans) consider all the items you rely on that require power. The clock starts ticking on perishables, your AC or heating doesn't work. The power backups at the utility providers (like gas stations, natural gas, water, sewer, internet, telephone) likely have 4-48 hours of reserve power. So... What do you do? What are you going to do if and when the rioting starts?
(This is an exercise to get you to plan ahead and to help others that may not have the same insight. This is NOT for fear-mongering. Those that have lived through storm events know what this is like.     ok, really? I'd get my peeps circled up in one location with as much fuel as we can get, gas, propane, charcoal, wood, car batteries. Then figure out food & water sources. We happen to have some free-range chickens, so making sure those are secure is tops. Oh, & make sure the bikes are working. That's off the top of my head.

  • Jim Mathews LOL, first thing I would do is take my trusty 5kw generator over to my friends gas station and trade him a .22 pistol and a couple hundred rounds ammo for as much gas as I can pump into my 5 20 gallon army surplus gas tanks. I won't go into further details, just know that I have thought this out and prepared......

  • Linda Mahoney Sauls bank, gasoline for vehicles and spares, LOTS of ice. fast thawing food to cooler, add ice, compact everything else from our 3 freezers into one freezer, pack with bags of ice and newspaper and foil, shut and don't open till food gone in cooler. All set for food and water, matches sterno, gallons of water prepared for hurricane each year. Do seal and fill bathtubs with water, washing machine as well. Gather neighbors and help put together plan so we all know what the others have to share if things get tough. (Andrew was a lesson well learned) Traded gas washer and dryer use for ice and food, traded our steaks for gasoline, game plan for finding water and ice, would split up as neighbors and each head for a different site and share what we got.

  • Michelle Rasberry Here in Arkansas we are use to our power going out for weeks at a time, especially in the winter months. You just light the fireplace and pull out the board games for the kids and do the best you can until power is restored. If you are smart you have a gas stove and you can heat some water to take a spongebath and at least eat. But if all else fails you just put the pot in the fireplace and do the best you can.

  • Donald Davis Lack of running water is much more scary than lack of power. There is wood to burn to cook if you have tools, etc whatever food is available, but fresh water is the real commodity.If there is no power for long periods of time, perishables can soon be forgotten about because ice only lasts for so long, same with gas once supply lines are cut and it runs out. The only real way to move forward is to learn to live without those comforts. people did it before, and survival instincts will kick back in, hopefully there will be some civility left among people if it ever does come to pass.

  • David OConnor I figure out my survival plan based on a few things - Water: Know where and how to get fresh water every single day. Food, be aware of how much you have and where/how to get more. Multivitamins help here. Shelter - don't let your environment kill you, and is also a handy place to prepare food. Showers and defecations - have a plan to facilitate this.

    How prepared should you be? Some people go to extremes in their bid to survive the worst holocaust, but that's incredibly expensive to do. If I have a knife, some rope, a tarp and a water filter I would feel pretty well prepared because the worst case scenario is the world goes to hell when you're out on vacation. Plan for that and think about what it would take to acquire the things you need to keep going. One week of food and water is pretty reasonable to have on hand - One month of food and water on hand will get you past the worst of most emergencies. For the most extreme (Look up katrina) you will have to rely on your neighbors working together to keep everyone going, which is read: alive.

    part of the problem is that people panic before they think.

    We are not that far removed from being the people who never had power to begin with.

    My grandparents lived in one room shacks with wood stoves and outdoor toilets.  No indoor plumbing.

    I spent summers on a farm that was the same until I was a teen.

     I used to "hobo" when I was a teen.  slept where I found space, camped in a tent.  ate out of cans and cooked on an open fire.  Walked or got rides however I could.

    The first thing is not to panic.  The next thing is to realize we do not "need" electricity to live.

    but, this is about a regular power outage not  a zombie apocalypse.  That would change a lot of things.

    Very good.  In that case... I'll take a stab at what memory serves me, and hopefully I won't get too much wrong...otherwise I'll be DEAD if this ever happens!

    in situations where supplies of finite quantity and there is no foreseeable resumption of basic social infrastructure, rationing is a good thing.  Food intake should be kept to a minimum where possible - humans can survive on around or less than 1000 calories per day, as I recall, though that number may be high.  If hunting for food is not a plausible activity, attempt to seek out and organize food acquisition and distribution; again, rationing here will become a necessity.  Canned goods are always a good thing.  If you're a baker, sourdoughs do not require much more than the starter, flour, and water.  Makeshift solar ovens, clay ovens, or underground fire pits can be useful for baking.

    Water is a necessity, especially in hot climates.  If gas or wood fuel is available, water boiled for 15 minutes (after a full boil is reached) should kill most microorganisms.  Do not catch water out of your gutter, especially if you have an asphalt roof - set up an independent catch-water system if you intend on trying to use water from the sky.  Coffee filters may remove a good number of large impurities, but distillation is the best for removing the most.  Wells have to be used with caution, especially around urban environments - lots of pesticides, heavy metals, and other nasty things will wind up in them.  A water heater can be an invaluable source of water - the catch to having it be one is that you have to regularly flush the tank.  The tanks have ports near the bottom for this purpose.  Flushing once a month would generally be sufficient to keep sludge to a minimum and a full 40+ gallons of fresh potable water available.

    Staying cool can be hard - wearing as little as possible and avoiding movement during the hottest daytime hours can help, as well as residing in the shade.  This also conserves energy and water.  Bathing may be reduced to sponge baths every couple of days, or longer if the situation becomes dire.  Wear hats to keep the sun off you, and loose breathable clothing if you must be in the sun.

    The propane tanks used for gas grills can be handy to have, but you have to have at least one or two on hand because once the power goes out, those things go out of stock fast.  The downside to the gas grill is it's terribly inefficient for heating things like water - we had to use ours for a while while our kitchen was obliterated.  Making spaghetti took a looong time.  Maybe it was just our piece-o-junk grill...

    Digging back to basics, if you are running out of fuel and happen to have trees available for the chopping, you can acquire two useful things: pitch and charcoal.  I don't remember the particulars about pitch and its usage (other than for making boats waterproof), but as I recall the charcoal is made by setting the chopped bits of wood on fire, then burying them to smolder and cool.  The process takes many hours.  The resultant charcoal should make excellent fuel.

    If riots are really a concern, having a shotgun or two on hand should at least deter people from rioting on your property.  The goal - get them to realize that your neighbor doesn't have a shotgun and doesn't mind a riot in HIS front yard. ;-)  No need to fire unless they are intent on causing you harm, the sound of a shotgun cocking should make most people rethink their intentions.

    Excellent advice Matt. For calories, basic rule as I understand it, to maintain your current weight an average metabolism must consume 100 calories per pound of person. So if you are 200lbs, 2000 calories on a normal day will sustain your mass. Do more work, you need more calories and start to shrink or waste away. Do less, need less.
    CDC and FDA recommend 1 gallon of fresh water per person per day. Plan accordingly.
    Rain water from roofs is still invaluable. You can use it for bathing and irrigation and for washing clothes and such items that will not be ingested. Washing dishes for instance, as long as the final rinse is with clean water.

    I want anyone that reads this to think back to their days in school. Catholic school, Montessori, k-6, Junior high, senior high, middle school, home school, raised by a pack of wolves, college, university, What Ever! and I want you to complain about what irked you without limit or criticism for your personal experiences. For those with children that have gone through any formalized education, I want what you didn't agree with with your own, and what you really can't stand or understand about what your children have to go through now. We all have a story, and I want to hear it.     • Jim Mathews My own experience??? New math. Came into existence when I was in second grade. Proclaimed a failure, when I was in the twelfth grade. My kids, the social indoctrination. My opinion?     • David OConnor I see a lot of people pointing toward the indoctrination thing that they see. Bottom line - It's easier to say "This is what/how/why/when things are/happened" than it is to lead a debate and instill critical thinking skills. I don't see a big conspiracy, I just see the results of underfunding, unrealistic expectations, emphasis on sports over educational achievement and the lack of an instant gratification reward system for doing well in school.

      Here's a true story for you: My Junior year in high school several area school created the 4 day rule - If you had a B or better in the class and had missed 4 or less days of school, you were not required to take the final exam at the end of each half of the school year. Attendance and grades shot through the roof. The school board stepped in after the first year and killed the program, various reasons for that but they missed the lesson of that experiment: If you put a tasty enough carrot at the end of the stick, even the 'bad kids' will bust ass to try to catch it.

    • Andy Cowen I did not like high school. I attended, and tried to find my way. I found most of the education pedantic and ineffective. VERY few of the teachers appeared any more interested in what they were doing than I was. The ones that were excited to be there were the ones that made a difference. I can rattle off names but won't right now. In high school, I found theater. I was all in. Theater was the reason I went to school, and the rest was just killing time to get back to the black box and create something. During that time, the wood-shop closed. Ceramics was shut down. The arts were being dismantled. Vocations were being snuffed out. The years that followed my graduation saw the demise of the theater program as well, and I think photography. It is hard to teach people how to learn, when you are taking away the way were are built to learn, through play and with action.

    • Andy Cowen Another rant: The worst thing I remember was a 7th grade transfer from a middle school in South Florida to a junior high in Brevard County. I was tutoring other children in algebra and was really progressing well. When the school tried to place me based on my classes, they saw that I was in algebra, but they didn't offer algebra for the 7th grade. They had Honors Pre-Algebra. Sounds great right? "Honors" I went from A's to a D. Obviously I was no longer allowed in the honors program and it wasn't until the next year, that I realized, I was in the wrong class. 8th Grade was learning what I already knew from my old school. What happened? They were teaching me fundamentals, that I did not need. I skipped over them and learned a different way and didn't know I needed to unlearn what I knew. I don't know how that could have gone better given the systems in place and the obstacles that they have to surmount. As it went, I lost my momentum and interest in math and never got it back.

    • Karen Cazessus Watson Andy, did we have the same Honors Pre-Algebra class! LOL! Leaving 6th grade I was doing so well in math that they placed me in the same class you mentioned @ Jefferson. My grades plummeted down to D's and F's as well. After that, I never regained my confidence in algebra or most of math for that matter. It was only when I was in geometry (something visual for my visual brain) that my grades went back up to A's.

It's my belief that it didn't have to happen that way, that a placement test at te end of each school year to determine where someone needs work and where they excel and place them in the right environment.   • Karen Cazessus Watson yes, that class not only wrecked my "groove", but it opened my eyes to the truth of what I was going to deal with thru the rest of jr school & high school. That teacher of said Honors class liked to spend his time "socializing" with a certain group of students. I won't describe them any further but you can guess which ones I mean. When I needed help understanding something and asked questions, I might as well have been talking to the wall. It seemed like this unfair system continued and not only sucked up the attention of the teachers, but the grading scale towards them always seemed to be a bit jilted. It wasn't all teachers- as you know we had a couple good ones-but if one of my parents had been a surgeon or an attorney, my final GPA and maybe my confidence in myself might have been higher. Maybe this is all schools everywhere and not just our little island...and maybe I should shut up and be happy that I did graduate with honors...but I hope for better for my daughter.

I taught full-time plus overtime to do the best I could with each individual group AND when I came home in the late afternoon I worked with my own children to make sure they were doing their homework well AND I cooked fabulous meals for family dinners. Parents + Teachers = education. We are ALL responsible for quality education.

  • Johanna Wilson PS - no grammar in school? Then insist upon excellent grammar at home. My father permitted no grammatical errors at home and took the time to explain each error I made throughout my childhood. I used to wonder if he actually heard what I was saying, but realized he was both listening and monitoring. Because I knew English grammar, I was able to fully understand the grammar of German and French. Parents + Teachers = we must work together.

  • Johanna Wilson What did I think of the system? It worked. We took little money and great effort and did the best we could. Improvements? Encourage the teachers to teach and cut down on Department of Education paperwork requirements. Changes? Find ways to incorporate/expand quality vocational education. Biggest gripe? Complainers. I prefer problem solvers who recognize problems and actively solve them. No solutions? Wrong! Make improvements one step at a time, affect your own world and watch the ripple effect on the rest of the world.

  • John Morris i think one of the biggest things to be a let down in brevard was the vocational tracks. they have initiated tracks for kids to follow for vocational skills...great!! however, once you're on a track, you can't change it. discover you don't like mechanics half way through your first year?? tough, you're in it til you're a senior. but also, not enough courses offered, and it's very school specific. if you want to go to another school with different vocations, you can, but you have to find your own transportation.
    even if it's not something a person chooses to continue down, i think the idea of these vocational paths are an essential part of a person's education. you get confidence by performing, achieving, and then believing in yourself. it can act as an instigator for other improvements. plus, for kids that don't do the educational thing well, it's a big plus coming out of the school system to say they have some appreciable skill.
    plus, and i'm a little biased here, i think they should teach more philosophy in schools. critical thinking, debate, and logic are invaluable skills for anyone at any point in their life.

    Florida offers the Bright Futures scholarship for either 75% or 100% of tuition. It's an excellent scholarship. Back in 1996 the 75% scholarship was called the Goal Seal Scholarship. One qualification was to complete three consecutive years in a vocational subject. It wasn't that students couldn't change, rather that it benefited them immensely to complete three years in the same field. My daughter Amanda took Drafting I, which at the time was all completed with paper and pencil. She excelled. During her second year the program switched to computers with level 1,2 and 3 in the same class. She immediately wanted to quit, because she didn't like computers; she was a hands-on artist. I convinced her to try for a year. During the third year she absolutely wanted to quit. She rejected school and the scholarship. With paper, pencil and a calculator I showed her how the Gold Seal scholarship would benefit her - it would be money in her pocket. She didn't care about money. We talked about "real world" finances. Senior year was difficult, but she finished her third year of drafting (and excelled at it!), completed one hundred hours of community service, attained the necessary grade point average and indeed received the Gold Seal Scholarship. Not many students did. Later when Pre-Paid tuition paid for her tuition and she received a check once per semester, she was glad she had not changed vocational tracks or given up. She has since earned a Bachelors and Masters degree in Fine Arts, lived for years as a "starving artist" and will be teaching art at Florida State University in the fall. The Gold Seal scholarship doesn't exist any longer.

    Another story that related to transportation - it's true that if a student wants to attend a school of choice, he has to find transportation. Perhaps that has changed, because I hear stories about one student riding a bus, but allow me to continue. Amanda tool French 1 in eighth grade, but it was not offered at the middle school in ninth grade. However I was teaching French 2 at the high school and at that time ninth grade was not a part of the high school. In order for her to take the class, I paid a friend to pick Amanda up at Jefferson Junior High (before it was a middle school, drive her to the high school, wait for her while Amanda took class and then drive her back to Jefferson to finish the day. Amanda received high school credit for French 2, but junior high elective credit for French 1 and I paid my friend $100 per month from August until the end of May. Consequently when Amanda entered tenth grade at the high school, she took French 3. We were not rich, but we paid for transportation and it was worth it.

    Here's the situation now - students begin Spanish 1 in seventh grade at their middle school and receive HIGH SCHOOL credit. When they take Spanish 2 in eighth grade, they receive high school credit. Therefore a student can earn his/her required high school world language credit before beginning high school. What a deal! There are also middle school classes for which they receive high school credit.

    Those are examples of what we parents have to do if we want to ensure our students' education. Money is tight in the school. Each school offers a concentration of courses to attract students to attend that school, but not every school can offer every course.

    We parents really do have to pitch in and help direct our students and make things happen. Child care was expensive when both us of parents worked, the school extras were expensive and in spite of Bright Futures scholarships and Pre-paid tuition, college fees and housing expenses are expensive. We had to live frugally. One way we saved money was never to eat out in restaurants. That got us through the year when both daughters were at the university and most of my paycheck was going to expenses. I learned to cook very well that year and have never turned back to restaurant food.

    I continue to hope that high school vocational education will at least point students into the right direction to attain further vocational education, here either at BCC or through employers willing to train students. Study the schools' programs and make it happen.

    Philosophy, critical thinking, debate and logic as credit courses in high school are expensive electives in these times, but in upper level classes with excellent teachers and at home with devoted parents and in community clubs, students will still learn these enough about these subjects to tide them over to the time when they can elect them at a high level.

    The government can no longer afford to offer the perfect curriculum to every person in every school district, but we parents can still make it happen. Parents + teachers = education.
    Hang in there and if you have children, teach them well. Never ever lose faith in a good education. You can make it happen.

    my only two problems with education system is 1) they work toward the average.  if you are a kid who is a bit quicker than the rest or a bit slower than the rest, you get ignored, you get bored and you fall through the cracks.

    2) Way too much rhetoric and political agendas/propaganda are involved in what students are taught.

    np.  my kids go to a small catholic school (I'm not christian, but it beats our public school system right now)  and I am the product of nothing but public schools.

    one other thing I am about tired of is teachers doing more than being a teacher.  My daughter expressed an interest in being a baker and owning her own bakery when she gets old enough.   I love it.  she picked something for a future she really loves to do and has plans to follow up on it.  one of the teachers at her school literally tried to talk her out of it saying she was "too smart" to be "just" a baker. and she should look at being a scientist of some type.

    that ticked me off.  Big time.  how dare she demean bakers and entrepreneurialism just because she has a hangup on girls in science.

    just teach the subject matter and let her parents guide her on life choices thank you very fricking much.

    yes, but when the direct information they are teaching the kids are outright lies in the name of indoctrination then it's a bad thing.  it happened then and still happens now.

    Andy I shall address your comment shortly but first I must reset a viewpoint!

    Indoctrination happens to every person in the world every single day of the week. Right now you sir are trying to indoctrinate the rest of us into the thought process that schools are doing evil things, whilst I am trying to indoctrinate people into the thought process that they are not. From different points of view, we are both right. I can point out examples where people go above and beyond to promote accurate information, you can point out examples where someone has distorted the truth to suit their own ends.

    There was an article the floated around about how FOX was banned in Canada because it's illegal to lie on national TV. I encourage you to really dig into that and read the details of what happened, who the players were and then think about why it happened and why FOX news made the decisions it made. It has everything to do with a private company wanting to promote an agenda and using a media outlet to indoctrinate the masses into believing something that wasn't necessarily true.

    On the other side of the coin is CNN - which promotes a different viewpoint that has a different target audience. CNN and FOX are two sides of the same indoctrination coin - They say the things that the target audience wants to hear in order to then provide ads which people are now interested in based on the reports they were just listening to.

    Back to the schools - Lies to indoctrinate are incredibly subjective, especially when it comes to history and discussing the politics of it. I challenge you to provide some examples of what lies are being spread in the name of indoctrination, and I'll find you proof which proves the lies true AND false at the same time. Should be a fun game.

    I believe you have indoctrination and influence mixed up.  per the dictionary..

    Influence: the capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of others

    Indoctrination: the act of indoctrinating,  or teaching or inculcating a doctrine, principle, or ideology, especially one with a specific point of view:

    each word has it's own meaning, we can't just make it up as we go along.

    David, Not Evil... Misguided. Formalized schools in America, the way they are today, didn't emerge until around 1910 along with the industrial revolution in the United States. They were essentially geared towards giving a baseline set of skills for industry jobs. It took off from there and we have been assembly line educating for over 100 years. We don't have the same end game to our education system now. There isn't an assembly line job waiting for us to walk into. Even college now is expected where once it was a very honored and respected thing in families.
    I am working off the premise, that the way schools operate, is not the best way for children or humans in general to learn. That is what, in my opinion, is broken.

    Andy post 1 - I think this points toward what I was referring to. Kid's get lost in the existential question of "What the hell am I doing this for?" For many of us (Myself included) I lacked the wisdom that extra years on my age and life experience has granted me to understand fully why trying so hard was important. Getting a letter at the end of each semester didn't matter to me one way or the other, as long as I progressed forward (didn't matter whether I leaped or crawled) I felt like I was doing well enough. The honor roll seemed neat to me but nothing more. It wasn't until the 4 day rule showed up that I took a sudden interest in going above and beyond the bare minimum needed to succeed.

    Andy post 2 - That points toward a lack of standardization, which is impossible unless you elevate setting what kids will learning to high levels of state and federal governments. Which flies in the face of states rights to decide what's best, which usually gets delegated down to the county level. In addition, they did a very poor job assessing what level of math you needed to be placed in, and so the screw job, while likely unintentional, happened.

    I think what it may point to more to a lack of proper analysis of the individual. The system that we have in place seems to be wary and reluctant to use placement tests to determine the proper level of the student. They are very hung up on keeping an age group together from start to finish. Grade skipping and being held back are all under the blanket of "no child left behind" and yet more standardized tests, for a non standard populace.

    TONY! How oh how do I indoctrinate someone without first having the ability to influence them? Indoctrination is the end result of having influenced someone to the point where the 'actions, behaviors, opinions, etc' more closely mirror your own because they now share the same 'doctrine, principles or ideology' that were spewed forth from your point of view.

    Sure it happens in schools, it absolutely does not stop there.

    It's built right in our nature as human beings to inluence those around us to the point where they follow blindly. For lack of a better term, it's how we build our personal empires and legacies.

    I realize now that the whole argument of indoctrination is a tangent.

    As a kid, I almost always hung out with older kids. I found that I had very little in common with the rest of my classmates other than the material we were all learning.

    Perhaps they need to be testing regular for emotional level vs intelligence level. Group kids by both emotional and intellectual scores.

    But still my sticking point is providing a carrot on the stick that kids would really strive for.

    on that  I agree completely.  Incentive is very important.  but it, in my opinion, is not up to the school to provide incentive, but the family.

    They took away all the classes that prepared kids to get a job out of high school in meaningful tasks.  shop classes, etc...

    Now they tell kids that high school diplomas aren't enough to get a decent job and push everyone to college.

    What is left besides personal motivation for the kids if they can't count on the education they are required to participate in doesn't even help them get decent job skills?

    That's a huge chunk of motivation right there taken away from them tot be replaced by what?  "sorry kid, you invest this time of your life in education but it won't get you anything at the end that's worthwhile"

    So +Tony Sandoval where do we go from your last statement? By "we" I mean society. Your statement is pretty darn bleak, and also frighteningly accurate. We have a legacy of a nanny state to contend with. Government controlled programs such as Public Education, serve some interesting needs and have existed long enough, that if we were to pull the rug out from them, we would be doing a dis-service to those that are in the program. School lunches (another topic for another Tuesday) may be the only good meal some children get. The tax money being returned to the tax payers for education services would not be enough to offset the cost of private education and given the state of our economy an overwhelming majority of families are dual income, leaving no one to tend to the care and education of our youth during the work day. Of course then we have the basic question of qualifications to teach basic skills. So many adults fell through the cracks in the last few generations that without professional teachers where would they learn?
    Now we need to brainstorm. How do we repair the education system?

    in my opinion, we need to stop being a consumer society.  move away from that idea and get back to being a product society.

    "Made in America" is a joke because only about 1/3 of the product is actually required to be assembled here to qualify.  and assembly is not quite the same as being "made" here.

    When we have the production jobs, we have something for our schools to prepare students for.

    In today's America, being an Entrepreneur means to sell something made somewhere else.  Where are the opportunities to build, create and repair the products here?

    you can't just open an auto shop anymore because of the technology built into the cars.  it's being part mechanic and part computer tech now.

    woodworking, cabinetry, metal working.  those are all things farmed out of the country anymore by and large.  imported and assembled instead.

    What are we preparing students for is what it really boils down to I think.

    If the politicians say "jobs" then what jobs? because according to the "experts" a high school diploma don't cut it anymore.

    if we say k 1 12 is to prepare for college, but not all kids get to go to college because while k -12 is mandatory and funded, college is not.  so that's just a huge lie right there.

    We need to answer the question what are we educating our students for.  to what end?  Just for educations sake?  That isn't happening effectively enough to justify mandatory school attendance if so.  Too many high school kids are still graduating at horribly low reading and writing levels to justify that.

    Perhaps an idea would be to break the mold of you are in this age group you are expected to move forward at this pace. But that requires a different kind of classroom I would think.

    I like history. Back in the old days when my grandparents went to school, it was a 1 room school house, the kind with the big bell tower, and you were there from 1st grade through 12th, along with all your brothers and sisters no matter the age and everyone learned side by side. It was a holistic education, one where everyone learned everything if they could grasp the concepts. I am now inspired to dig deeper into the practices used by those pioneer educators, just for comparison sake. Now of course, that was when a graduating class was 12 kids or less. Small towns, few families, maybe only 1 formal teacher and the parents to help where they could, though most of them were not very well educated themselves. The truly fortunate had tutors. Today, there are many great resources, such as www.Kahnacademy.org and countless other free online education services. Our society has changed since the school house was enough, and there are obviously logistical problems when you have to handle class sizes over 30. I may be delusional, but there is a sense of change about us that I can't shake, and I can't help but look to the past to understand where the future could take us.

    +Andy Cowen I find your question amusing, disturbing, and curious, all at once.  Amusing, because we all have interesting stories, and it's been fun to read some.  Disturbing, because it takes only one point of view on the education system, and does not give any service to what actually DOES work in it - and yes, I believe there are some things about it that do work.  That isn't to say it isn't still in a dismal state.  Curious, because it brings to mind some of the reasons my wife and I intend to educate our children in what would be nowadays considered non-traditional.  But to answer your question, and to provide counterpoising perspective:

    What went right and wrong for me:  Teaching relies on an unwritten contract between a teacher and a student, and it's as much the student's responsibility to learn as it is the teacher's responsibility to teach.  Yet, too often the burden of an entire class leaves many students without sufficient "teaching" in a manner that works for them.  Example - 8th grade I took Algebra-1, and did poorly, even though I had excelled in math in my prior school (a private school).  Against my teacher's wishes, I proceeded into Geometry in the 9th grade, and did quite a bit better.  Algebra-2 in the 10th grade was a blast for me.  I attribute all of this to the teachers teaching in a manner I found effective for learning, or not (in the case of 8th grade).  11th and 12th grade I began to slack off, for reasons beyond this conversation.  In other classes, my interest was simply not held, or I questioned why such topics were important, like many other students.  Having been out in the world now I can appreciate those topics much, much more, and believe I could impart some of that appreciation to my children at least.

    I had very good teachers, all in all, until college - and even they were not all bad.  Of all my friends, I am one of the very few to have achieved a bachelor's degree from a major institution (UCF).  I mention that only because I want to speak to the notion of what college prepares us for, and what it doesn't.  I certainly learned a great deal there, and have used my knowledge in my career.  Not every college degree will grant that, but I believe there is great value in upper-education.  What we must dispose of is the mythical promise of wealth and riches as the reason for upper education.  From a purely workmanship point-of-view, I can offer this:  I have seen the output of both a university and a technical school - UCF versus Full Sail - for software engineers.  Full Sail teaches the how.  UCF teaches the why.  That, I believe, underscores the awesome difference between technical/vocational schools and those that offer full accredited 4-year degrees.  If I could change anything about upper-education, I would combine the two schools into one.

    That being said, I also learned in my post-graduate days that much of graduate school is designed to produce people who stay in the university system.  A Masters will get you a little farther than a bachelor's in the private sector, but a Ph.D. will get you tenure at some big-U, if you can pull it off...of course, in the US, you then spend your days peddling for research money for the university.  That's part of the reason I decided that a Ph.D wasn't for me.  (Sometimes Ph.D.s make it into the private sector, but really the degree tends to become a liability there.)  Yet its frequently Ph.D.s that make inventions that change the world.  Point is: people in this country need college a lot more than anyone is willing to admit, because frankly they're not getting that quality or quantity of education in the primary schools, and it's the sort of advanced knowledge that other countries (Germany, for instance) believe should be provided FOR FREE.

    There are many things I find disturbing about our current culture, and our public primary education systems.  First, the notion that we send children to schools for the "social experience."  This has got to be one of the most laughable excuses people pipe up with when they want to rail against homeschooling.  Social experience?  I was bullied, taunted, and generally depressed - how does that help my learning experience?  Not everyone experiences that, but the point is that school is supposed to be a learning environment, not a social conditioning mill.  While it's important that children be taught the ways of the world and how to interact with others, I think it's perfectly achievable without having to resort to public, or even private,  education complexes.  It starts by removing them from under the rock and letting them see the real world.

    Second, no one takes public education seriously enough to invest serious money in it.  We took my son to the county school office and I was surprised at how dismal the building looked.  I quipped to my wife: "Yep, this must be a government building."  Money doesn't cure every evil, but a lack of money certainly doesn't help either.  We don't pay good teachers worth their feed, we don't keep our schools in good order, we don't have enough teachers to go around...  So that's certainly broken.  But supposing all of that was fixed...would public school still be broken?

    My son currently attends a day-care that has a learning curriculum.  I spent a day there recently to observe and interact.  I was interested to see how two teachers in a classroom of 9-to-15 2-to-3-year-olds managed.  I can say this much: they needed a lot more help.  I also saw a lot of missed opportunities for interaction, involvement, and interest stimulation.  That's a private institution, and of course they are three-year-olds.   I wonder how it will be in public school?

    Not just anyone can be a teacher, but a teacher could be any one of us.  What is it to teach?  How many who have responded to this post have taught?  I can only say that, as the parent of a child with a communication delay, I and my wife have worked hard to teach my son how to talk, to interact, and in some cases to learn.  But until we learned how to teach him, we had no idea what we were doing.  It turns out that teaching is more about understanding children than it is about understanding the topics we're trying to teach them.  I think that's where many people get it wrong.  You can teach a topic 100 different ways and never be understood - understand how your child learns, and now you can teach them exactly how they need to be taught.  But what are we trying to teach them?

    I pine for my math skills, slowly deteriorating from lack of use and a poor practice when I had time to practice and a teacher to question; my joy of reading has taken off so many years beyond when it mattered for a grade; I would love to really learn some foreign languages, yet it's ever more difficult with age; politics, economics, chemistry, physics...so many interesting topics, so little time now.  I want my children to be forces of good in the world, to be part of positive change.  For them to be that, they have only this one chance to learn as much as possible about how the world, the universe, science, nature, math, language works.  One chance.  This is their only time.  It's not that our education system is broken, it's that it is overburdened and crushed under its own weight and the various beliefs that people hold against it.  Society is broken - we believe we just need to pawn our kids off on other people who are "qualified" to teach, when in fact we have an innate responsibility to teach our children ourselves - to be part of the teaching equation, to build up their self-esteem and the belief that they can learn and achieve great things.  We need to teach them the joy of learning, rather than sitting by while random events stomp out all desire.

    We waste our children's opportunity to learn if we ourselves, as parents, are not active participants.  Asking if their homework is done and going to PTA meetings does not quality.  Of all the things I could do with my spare time, all the things I could do for myself, I gladly sacrifice it all for my children and their continued learning and development.

No matter what this is a valuable discussion to have and get everyone's story. At the end of the day, we are responsible for ourselves. We are not taught self reliance or how to learn in school. Society has the crutch of a system and have largely forgotten how to teach or how to learn. We now relegate those tasks to the noble teachers that have taken up the torch of knowledge, and the system that is supposed to serve the task. It is taken for granted, that there will always be people to perform this task. It's true that there will be, but they will be in the institutions less and less if things do not change, as the incentive to remain there diminishes. Society certainly needs to be turned on it's ear. I get the thought that to move forward, we must look back and learn the lesson of history, from as many angles as we can find.

    Without jobs , or job prospects , those not involved in technology will never find work no matter what we throw at them in education.
    The educational "system " just did not keep up with reality.

    "the world needs ditch diggers too." Having worked in construction, it is one of the more gratifying jobs I have ever had. It was hard. I was sore. I was hot. I was sometime hungry and thirsty and bathroom breaks could be restrictive. It did not make me rich. On the other hand, I was in great shape. I was using my hands and that felt good. I could see progress being made in minutes opposed to maybe never at all. I got to work outside, and most of the time had fresh clean air to breath. To be a laborer is to be honest. I will always contend that there are jobs out there, but there are cavetes to that statement. One may not make what you are worth, and more likely not as much as you need, and the job may fall below your "station". For my part, an income is better than no income and I would dig a ditch, frame a house, lay cement, install fences, and nearly any job that Mike Rowe have ever done. It feels good to be dirty, and everyone should have a dirty job once in their lives so they can feel a little respect for those that can't or don't want to work in an office and attend meetings about nothing day after day.

    This is a little off-topic, but while recently considering the various notions as to why the middle-class is displeased with the upper-class (in a blog post), the notion of "job creators" struck a key with me and I realized there was something very wrong with the notion of wealthy being touted as "job creators:"  it doesn't account for everyone else who is also a "job creator."  The fact is, we all create work for other people to do - everything we choose not to, or are unable to do ourselves, is something someone else can and usually does do.  Think about how many services you use in any given day.  Think of all the work that has to be done to make those services available.  If you didn't buy those services - if few or no one did - there'd be no work and no employment in them.  Yet many somehow cling to the belief that there are two kinds of people in our country: those who create jobs, and those who work them.  Whatever we do to earn money, the minute we spend it we are "creating" jobs.

    But how do we compete in a "global market?"  There are so many problems - standard and cost of living differences, education differences, environmental concern differences...  Back before the world got really small, I imagine it was a little easier to compete in your "local" market for work.  For a living, I can't compete in a market like eLance, because regardless of my skills or education people in India can afford to charge 20-50% less.  This is no exaggeration.  As we watched thousands of jobs disappear overseas with the promise of "lower prices" or higher profit margins, those in our own country who were displaced felt the sting of the global economy.  Our education woes underscore the current war of attrition unconsciously waged on us, and as we have waged on others, by the very nature of open and unregulated competition between very different populations of workers.  How will we ever compete with a people who are better educated, better skilled, and whose base income requirements are significantly less than our own?  It occurs to me that of all the ways our education system fails, the teaching of money and economics matters is the way in which it fails the absolute worst.
