• Rowan County Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis has been dominating the news with her bigotry. She was denied her 3rd appeal to the supreme court, refused yet again and has been jailed, since then the county has been issuing same sex wedding licenses, specifically to James Yates and Will Smith Jr. this morning. Let’s hope that she fades into the margins of history.

• And in a surprise twist, well not that surprising, in Hamilton County Tennessee, Chancellor Jeffery Atherton denied a divorce request citing the supreme court's gay marriage ruling. Atherton said the Supreme Court must clarify "when a marriage is no longer a marriage." Otherwise, he contended, state courts are impaired from addressing marriage and divorce litigation altogether. He wrote "The conclusion reached by this Court is that Tennesseans have been deemed by the U.S. Supreme Court to be incompetent to define and address such keystone/central institutions such as marriage, and, thereby, at minimum, contested divorces."

1. Peaceful measures. China continues to reduce its standing military. In 1997 they cut 500,000 from their ranks. • GOP Presidential bid demander and chief Donald Trump has been in the news a lot this week. • And chiming in on the xenophobia and riding the coat tails of the Donald’s racial insensitivity, KOCH Bros GOP Presidential hopeful Scott Walker urged that the visit by China’s President next month be scrapped and attacked the nation for cyber attacks and economic turmoil. • Democratic Senator from Massachusetts Elizabeth Warren has been cited as not yet seeking a second term. Could she be weighing options as a running mate for Bernie Sanders? 1. The President of the United States is an interesting man. He’s an excellent politician, as we have seen by how productive he has been in spite of the really productive actions the Democratic party has put though being systematically stonewalled by the GOP, he’s still guided dramatic changes. Now, seeing as how he can’t be re-elected due to term limits, he’s calling a spade a spade.  At a Democratic Conference in Nevada, he said,
   “It’s hard for me to express how much I love Harry Reid, but it’s easier to do it in a room of people who love Harry Reid. Harry and I drove over here together and we were doing a little reminiscing, and then figuring out how we’re going to deal with the crazies in terms of managing some problems. And then we talked about riding off into the sunset together. Everything I’ve accomplished, I’ve accomplished because Harry Reid was there by my side. And I am forever grateful for his friendship and his strength, because the thing about Harry is he’s a great politician but he’s also a man with a lot of backbone and is willing to do hard things when it’s required, and that’s what you want out of a political leader.“ He hasn’t apologized, and I don’t think he should. 1. John Oliver, and his show Last Week Tonight, has been a powerful force for putting a spotlight on the horrible and ridiculous things that are going on right under our noses. Lately he has taken on the prosperity gospel televangelists. He formed his own church, and this was all to highlight how stupidly easy it is to take advantage of the tax laws around religious exemptions, and went ahead and registered his own church with the IRS, called Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption. The IRS was apparently watching the show, or was like a dog that had its nose shoved in a pile of it’s own doo after take a crap on your oriental rug. Trump, even though he was misogynistic, unapologetic and combative to the other GOP hopefuls, continues to strike a disturbing chord among the voters and had a surge in the polls after the debates. I'm disappointed in you America. You should feel bad.

• Google will now be under a parent company called Alphabet in a restructuring of the tech giant's business operations.  The Google moniker and web experience will remain the same, but some ventures that were under the Google umbrella will be placed under Alphabet instead with a CEO running each business unit.
  Larry Page will serve as CEO of Alphabet, with fellow Google co-founder Sergey Brin as president. In a blog post announcing the change, Page said that Google is "operating well today, but we think we can make it cleaner and more accountable."
  Sundar Pichai, who has effectively been leading Google's day-to-day operations, will step into the CEO role.

• Alphabet’s website is abc.xyz because Alphabet.com is owned by Alphabet, a BMW-owned fleet management service. Even though only a few people had ever heard of BMW’s Alphabet before, the company clearly isn’t going to let all of this free publicity just sit there unconverted.

You remember the ALS Ice Bucket challenge, don’t you? it was a crazy social media campaign to bring awareness and fundraising for medical research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or, as it’s more commonly known, Lou Gherig’s Disease.  In a paper recently published by a team from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, researchers believe they have made a significant leap forward in understanding one of the major mysteries of ALS (in brief, the team has identified the role of the TDP-43 protein, and how it manifests in both healthy and diseased cells.) In and of itself, the research is too technical to have likely made waves outside the medical research field. However, as Johns Hopkins graduate student and paper co-author Jonathan Ling explained in a recent Reddit AMA, this breakthrough can be directly traced back to the outpouring of interest, and money, from the ice bucket challenge… ...Much of the money raised by the ice bucket challenge is only now beginning to be felt in the research community, as the ALS Association has spent a large part of the past year working to properly allocate the $100 million that they received during the past summer (as compared to the $3 million that they received in the summer prior.)  http://magazine.good.is/articles/als-ice-bucket-challenge-results
