  1. A speech, but from whom?

This Week in History:

  1. Special presentation from Fred Sims.

Science Bitches!

The theme of today’s segment is transportation!

  1. Aaaaaand… STUCK the landing! SpaceX’s recent test flight, that is: http://www.space.com/33004-spacex-thaicom8-launch-rocket-landing.html

  2. Speaking of test flights - it’s long been a maxim of space programs that every flight is a test flight. It’s simply too expensive to launch enough missions to collect big, juicy data sets. Jeff Bezos over at Blue Origin wants to change that with his relatively inexpensive and autonomous New Shepard design. The more data we get, the safer space travel gets: http://arstechnica.com/science/2016/05/jeff-bezos-is-trying-to-destroy-his-own-spacecraft-and-thats-a-good-thing/

  3. Speaking of making spaceflight cheaper, India has unveiled a small reusable craft that only cost 14 million to make its flight - for reference, each NASA shuttle cost 450 million per mission. Now, this craft is unmanned and mostly a test platform, but it’s a proof of concept showing how affordable space programs can be: http://www.iflscience.com/space/india-has-launched-low-cost-space-shuttle

  4. Also in the field of space innovation - inflatable spaceships?! It’s more likely than you think. So likely, in fact, it’s being tested on the International Space Station: http://www.iflscience.com/space/watch-live-nasa-inflates-first-expandable-room-iss

  5. And finally, just as every space mission must one day come back to earth, so too must this segment - but only because we get to cover a cool superbus which can literally drive OVER other cars: http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2016-05/25/c_135387633.htm

  8. May 5th, 2000- The Sun, Earth, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn align – Earth’s moon is also almost in this alignment – leading to Doomsday predictions of massive natural disasters, although such a ‘grand confluence’ occurs about once in every century.

  9. May 5th also a banner day for philosophy as both Soren Kierkegaard and Karl Marx were born on this day just 5 years apart in 1813 and 1818

  10. May 6th, 1856- Sigmund Freud, Austrian neurologist, founder of psychoanalysis.

Fallacist’s Fallacy

Explanation

The fallacist’s fallacy involves rejecting an idea as false simply because the argument offered for it is fallacious. Having examined the case for a particular point of view, and found it wanting, it can be tempting to conclude that the point of view is false. This, however, would be to go beyond the evidence.

It is possible to offer a fallacious argument for any proposition, including those that are true. One could argue that 2+2=4 on the basis of an appeal to authority: “Simon Singh says that 2+2=4”. Or one could argue that taking paracetamol relieves headaches using a post hoc: “I took the paracetamol and then my headache went away; it worked!”

Each of these bad arguments has a true conclusion. A proposition therefore should not be dismissed because one argument offered in its favour is faulty.

Example

“People argue that there must be an afterlife because they just can’t accept that when we die that’s it. This is an appeal to consequences; therefore there is no life after death.”

  1. On this Day in History: http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history

    1. 1935 - FDR SIgns Emergency Relief Appropriation Act: hoping to lift the country out of the midst of the Great Depression, FDR authorized almost $5 million to implement work relief programs. Congress allowed the president to use the funds at his discretion. The act was unprecedented and remains the largest system of public-assistance relief programs in the nation’s history. Its programs were extremely popular, though, and contributed significantly to Roosevelt’s landslide reelection in 1936.

    2. 1974 - Hank Aaron becomes baseball’s new home run king with 715th career home run: Broke the previous mark of 714 held by Babe Ruth. Home run hit in the 4th inning of a game against the LA Dodgers. Bittersweet moment as despite being a beloved player in Atlanta his pursuit of the record was met with racist hate mail and death threats

    3. 1994 - Kurt Cobain is found dead: famed frontman of the band Nirvana found dead with fresh injection marks in his arms and a fatal wound to the head from the 20-gauge shotgun found between his knees

    4. 2005 - Olympic Park Bomber Eric Rudolph agrees to plead guilty: plead guilty to avoid the death penalty. Responsible for 1996 Olympic bombing in Atlanta. Born in Merritt Island, FL, Rudolph was also responsible for 3 other bombings motivated by his anti abortion and anti- homosexual views.

    5. 2013 - Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s first female prime minister dies: Only female prime minister of Britain, served from 1979 to 1990  as the longest serving  British PM of the 20th century
