Logical Fallacy - Black or White

The Bad:

  1. On October 12, 2011, Orange County experienced the deadliest mass killing in its modern history. Scott Dekraai killed 8 people, including his ex-wife, in a Seal Beach beauty salon. He was arrested wearing full body armor just a few blocks away. Without a doubt, Dekraai was the perpetrator. A dozen surviving witnesses saw him. He admitted to the shooting early on. Yet, nearly four years later, the case against him has all but fallen apart.
It turns out that prosecutors and police officers committed an egregious violation of Dekraai's rights—so much so that Superior Court Judge Thomas Goethals shocked everyone and removed the Orange County District Attorney's Office, and all 250 prosecutors, from having anything more to do with the case.

  2. Aurora Mass Shooter's Diary Debunk a Favorite NRA Talking Point "ETA response [approximately] 3 mins," he noted. Orly Radio Show 42 - 42, the Meaning of Life, or about how many senators believe in climate change.

ORly Radio Show 42 for Friday January 23rd, 2015 - 42, the Meaning of Life, or about how many senators believe in climate change. Science is still true even if you don’t believe in it...

Hosts: Andy & the Usual Suspects: Mike, David, and Don!!!
Music: "Rocket and Pamgaea” by Kevin MacLeod (www.incompetech.com)

Narrator: There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

Why 42 for the meaning of life, the universe and everything?

According to Douglas Adams himself:

What is the most ordinary, workaday number you can find? I don’t want fractions on the end of it. I don’t even want it to be a prime number. And I guess it mustn’t even be an odd number. There is something slightly more reassuring about even numbers. So I just wanted an ordinary, workaday number, and chose 42.

In another interview:

The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought '42 will do'. I typed it out. End of story.

In conclusion, the Senate is pretty clearly a hoax.

Item: Couple near death after being trapped in keyless car, didn't think to open it manually.
New Zealand couple Mollieanne and Brian Smith, who nearly fell prey to their cold, unfeeling Mazda 3 hatchback.

The couple found themselves inside their new "keyless" car in their garage on November 5th, and without their transponder, believed there was no way to get themselves out.  the car's victims were discovered by neighbors at 7:45 am, 13 hours since they first were trapped, Mrs. Smith had become unconscious, and Mr. Smith was struggling for air. The wife spent three days in a hospital recovering from her robotic attack. Doctors said if they had spent even another 30 minutes inside that car, they would have died.

They are both fine now, though definitely changed from the experience. And they have learned that "the manual lock was the same as the inside door handle on many other vehicles."
