ORly Radio Show 90 - Welcome to 2016!

Welcome to ORly Radio Show 90 for Friday January 1st, 2016 - where we dismantle the current events for your edutainment through mostly rational conversations that make you go ‘Oh Really’! I’m your host Andy Cowen with Fred Sims, Stephen Griffith.

Errata From Previous Shows: We make mistakes. Please, if you find one, pause the podcast, and send us a note. orlyradiopodcast@gmail.com or phone it in 470-222-6759

On Show 19, August 15th 2014, We mentioned and had quite a discussion on how some Police Agencies will not hire applicants whose mental capabilities, their IQ, is too high. This seemed a bit dubious at the time as being completely counter intuitive, given they were trying to claim it was to maintain job satisfaction levels and other such things. Well, today we have a first hand account of this policy in action. Fred, tell us what you went through.

Item: Florida, officials ban term 'climate change' - “Deputy General Counsel Larry Morgan was giving us a briefing on what to expect with the new secretary,” Byrd recalled. Morgan gave them “a warning to beware of the words global warming, climate change and sea-level rise, and advised us not to use those words in particular.” In a February press conference, Scott unveiled $106 million in his proposed budget to deal with the effects of rising oceans. But $50 million of that is for a sewage plant in the Keys, and $25 million is for beach restoration, which critics say is hardly a comprehensive plan to protect homes, roads and infrastructure.|

Orly Radio Show 42 - 42, the Meaning of Life, or about how many senators believe in climate change.

ORly Radio Show 42 for Friday January 23rd, 2015 - 42, the Meaning of Life, or about how many senators believe in climate change. Science is still true even if you don’t believe in it...

Hosts: Andy & the Usual Suspects: Mike, David, and Don!!!
Music: "Rocket and Pamgaea” by Kevin MacLeod (www.incompetech.com)

Narrator: There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

Why 42 for the meaning of life, the universe and everything?

According to Douglas Adams himself:

What is the most ordinary, workaday number you can find? I don’t want fractions on the end of it. I don’t even want it to be a prime number. And I guess it mustn’t even be an odd number. There is something slightly more reassuring about even numbers. So I just wanted an ordinary, workaday number, and chose 42.

In another interview:

The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought '42 will do'. I typed it out. End of story.

Item: Senate agrees climate change is real, but not on its cause, in Keystone amendments
"To express the sense of the Senate that climate change is real; and human activity significantly contributes to climate change."
In the end, just 50 senators voted "yes" on this question.* But 49 senators voted "no." The amendment failed to pick up the 60 votes necessary to overcome a filibuster and was rejected.
In conclusion, the Senate is pretty clearly a hoax.
